About Dusty Boot Dancing

Small Beginnings

Originally concocted in a small dance room at Idaho State University in 2012, the idea of Dusty Boot Dancing was inspired by a group of students who wanted to get together to dance, but wanted something different that what was offered.

There were two options at the time, pay a lot of money for and invest in a schedule to take formal classes, or attend a club and pick up what there was to offer from layman teachers and other dancers.

What if you could get a bit more of both?

A Conundrum

The problem of how to get the best of both studio style and club style fun was a tricky one to solve.

Studios generally turned out amazing dancers, but often were limited in how often they could provide opportunities to social dance. Clubs, on the other hand, had ample time to dance, but were often lacking in the quality of their curriculum. Putting them together would be a great idea, but difficult in application.

Lessons had to be intriguing and extensive so as to provide quality and skill, but succinct and easy to understand so the limited time in a night could still be filled with socializing and dancing. There had to be a way to present a lot of information, with as little talking, and as much practice and application as possible. And the dancing atmosphere had to be inviting, accommodating, and sociable.

The Solution

A new curriculum was developed. Taking teaching concepts and patterns on how to teach and explain exhibition dancing like ballet, tap, and modern, and combining it with concepts of social dancing like ballroom, swing, and Latin, was a part of the solution.

Organizing the information to be presented in ways that allowed singular concepts to be applied in a multitude of ways was the second part of the solution.

And part three was structuring the class and dances in a way that they built upon each other, but allowed both consistent and pick-up students the ability to get something no matter when they came to learn or dance.

Now we operate as a social dance club with an extensive and quality curriculum to foster skilled dancers in a fun environment.
